I’ve been spending a lot of time this summer working with leaders to help them crystallize web and digital strategy for their business. At first, they seem to be disinterested because they think I’m asking them to determine their organization’s web design, content or technology strategy.  But I try to hold their feet to the fire and explain to them that an organization’s online strategy is about business, about profit and meeting the mission and performance indicators.

Web managers turn Web strategy into execution plans and Web mechanics execute. But what about Web strategy? Who is ultimately responsible for establishing the underlying strategy for the corporate Web presence? That's actually the role of executive staff.

I just saw something on Twitter that pulled on my heartstrings. It was a tweet that referenced a Federal colleague working on a Web 2.0 strategy in an agency with 13 CIOs.

Web Strategy: A Definition

Despite the simplicity and some would say obviousness of the concept of “Web Strategy,” it is a definition that I’ve struggled with for many years. Frequently, when organizations and individuals talk about Web Strategy they are talking about the organization’s approach to creating the outward facing Web site-- that with which the general public or the employee (in the case of intranets) interacts.
